Workshops in Senegal

26 Dec- 7 Jan 2010 Intermediate/Advanced level - Led by Mamady Keita

13 Feb - 25 Feb 2010 - Improver/Intermediate level - Led by Seckou Keita

After an incredibly successful workshop in Senegal in February 2009, that surprised even ourselves, we are delighted to offer again - not one, but two drumming workshops this winter in the beautiful village of Abéné. Led by two exceptional artists with outstanding careers, this promises to be an extraordinary adventure!!!

Intermediate to Advanced level:  26 Dec- 08 Jan 2010 (with Travel to Banjul on 25 Dec and return on 9 Jan 2010)

This course will be led by one of the few remaining, and probably the most acclaimed, Master Drummer from Guinea: The one and only Mamady Keita. “His teaching and playing is so inspirational” has said one of last year’s students. “Some of the things he gives you remain with you for life” said another one. In other word, this is a lifetime opportunity.

You will be taught many traditional rhythms. There will be a focus on traditional solos and breaks. Additionally, you will also have the unique opportunity to learn some of Mamady’s own compositions. He is supported on Dun Dun by his wife Monette and Seckou Keita.

Improver to Intermediate level:  13 -25 Feb 2010 (with Travel to Banjul on 12 Feb and return on 26 Feb 2010)

With a international reputation and incredible versatility, Seckou Keita is one of the few artists has been described as a virtuoso on both Kora and percussion instruments such as the Djembe, Sabar, Seourouba or even the Drum Kit. “He has always something special on offer”, as put by one of his students. For this workshop, Seckou will teach traditional rhythms as well as some solos and breaks. Seckou has also designed a special session for drumming with music (1 per week) where he will be supported by local musicians on guitar, bass, Kora and voices. For Seckou’s workshop, we are able to offer the choice of 1 or 2 weeks option.

BOOK THIS COURSE WITH SECKOU KEITA NOW

Optional 10 hours Dun-Dun sessions: For both workshops we have designed a 10 hours dun dun workshop that will be spread throughout your stay, whether 1 or 2 weeks. This will be a perfect opportunity to learn, practice and explore further Dun-Dun patterns and rhythms that will have been taught during the Djembe workshops. Those sessions will be run by Seckou Keita and supported on Djembe by local drummers.

Location: All workshops will take place in the incredible beach village of Abéné, in Casamance, about 1 hour from the Gambian border. The village has become a hub for artists, with a large community of drumming and dancing troupes, as well as crafts include woodcarving, traditional artefacts and batik fabric dying. During Mamady’s workshop, there will also be the annual Abéné festival which features local and national ballet and bands.  During Seckou’s workshop, you will be able to experience the Kafoutine Carnival, featuring mainly ballet drumming troupes and a variety of Senegalese music bands

What the package includes: 15 hours tuitions per week, Standard Accommodations on a shared basis, Breakfast, lunch and dinners, Transport to and from Banjul Airport (on 25 Dec, 9 Jan, 12 Feb and 26 Feb 2010), Entertainment at the local festival and carnival, Carbone emissions offset for your time in Senegal

What it does not include: Flights, travel insurance, drinks, excursions and any other personal expenses.

What will happen next? Your booking will be confirmed by email or phone call and you will receive some information and tips on how to organise your trip (flights, health advice, draft schedule, etc.). You will also need to fill in a questionnaire so we can be prepared for any special requirements you may need.  Then one month before the trip you will receive a final schedule with all contacts and final details.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Evaluating your level

Have you got any doubt about your level? Here is some guidance:
